You also need stub-outs for the vent stacks that must eventually go all the way through the roof.

Plumbing code dictates how many fixtures can attach to each vent stack and drain. Plumbing code requires that each plumbing fixture has a trap and a vent pipe to which it attaches. The codes also require clean-outs installed exterior to the slab, usually near the outside of the foundation at its upper end. Properly installed clean-outs make it easy to maintain the system, especially if it backs up.

The clean-out includes a pipe that sits above grade, with a sewer cap that tightens. The size of the drains, stub-outs and vent stacks are based on the fixtures that will be attached to them or where they are placed as per plumbing code charts.

The final drainage pipe size is determined by the number of bathrooms and fixtures in a home. Each bathroom, sink and drain in the house must have a stub-out in the DWV system that sits above the final slab height. The building inspector usually requires a temporary standpipe -- at least 10 feet tall -- above the highest fitting added to the DWV system to test it for air or water leaks.

If it leaks, the system must be repaired before the slab is poured. The sewer line to the septic or sewer system must also be tested in the same way. This can include just about anything, including installing an electrical outlet in a concrete floor. The challenging part of this project isn't the wiring, but having to cut through the concrete. But, with the right tools and safety precautions, the job can be completed by the determined DIYer. Locate the nearest junction box where you will be connecting the new electric outlet.

Junction boxes are about 4 inches square and usually mounted on the outside of the wall in concrete areas, such as basements. Draw a line from the junction box or outlet to where you want the new outlet to be located in the concrete floor with a contractor crayon.

Lay the outlet box on the floor in your chosen location. Mark around the outside of the box and set aside. Attach a spade concrete cutting bit to the end of an electric jackhammer. Put on the proper safety equipment, including work clothes, gloves, goggles and a helmet. Place the edge of the spade on the ground at the start of the line. Turn on the jackhammer and break up the concrete along the line.

You only need to make the trench wide and deep enough for an electric conduit. Work your way down the maker with the jackhammer, breaking up the concrete as you work.

Make a larger hole at the end of the line for the outlet. Turn off the electricity at the main circuit breaker for the circuit that controls the junction box. Loosen the screws holding the cover of the junction box in place with a screwdriver and remove. Measure out the distance between the junction box and the outlet. Use a pair of snips to cut off the same amount of conduit.

Loosen the retaining screw at the bottom of the junction box. Knock out the plug with a screwdriver if needed. Thread the wires from the conduit into the junction box and pull the conduit up tight against the junction box body in the retaining outlet. Secure in place by tightening the retaining screw. Connect the black wire from the conduit run to the black wire inside the junction box, the white wire to the white wire in the junction box, and the bare copper wire to the bare copper wire inside the junction box or the grounding screw if the copper grounding wire isn't present.

Replace the junction box cover. Knock out the plug in the side of the outlet box. Thread the wires and conduit into the outlet as you did with the junction box. Secure with the retaining screw.

Lay the outlet box into the opening in the concrete so the opening is facing upwards. Loosen the terminals on the side of the outlet. Connect the black conduit wire inside the junction box to the terminal marked "Live" on the terminal, the white wire to the terminal marked "Neutral" on the outlet, and the copper wire to the green grounding screw.

Gently press the outlet into the outlet box and secure with screws on the top and bottom. Replace the outlet in the hole. Restore power to the electrical circuit. Use a voltmeter to test the outlet for power. If the meter doesn't move, recheck your wiring connections. Mix concrete according to the manufacturer's instructions and pour into the trench to cover the conduit and around the outlet box.Clearly mark your stub out pipes by painting them orange or tying caution ribbon to them.

This will help prevent them being inadvertently knocked askew by other trades working in the area. Do not pour concrete over any pipe that has not been pressure tested.

If the pipes are not pressure tested you will have no way of knowing if they were damaged during the backfill process and you will be liable for any repairs needed because it will be assumed it was the weight of the concrete that caused the problem. You must stub out toilets, water lines and electrical conduit, as well as main utility lines that enter the building from below the foundation and rise up into the building.

You can stub out pipes in a concrete slab easily because the stub out is put in place before the final grade for the concrete slab is prepared, but you must be very skilled in making the necessary connections for the pipes. Locate the position on your project plans where the pipes need to turn up through the slab to connect to the next level of plumbing.

Use a tape measure and the dimensions on the plans to locate this point on the actual installed pipe. Install the appropriate pipe fitting to allow for the pipe to turn up and stub out of your slab.

The fitting will depend upon the kind of pipe you are installing. Measure from the inside threads of the up-turn of your fitting metal or PVC to a point that is a minimum of 8 inches above the finished height of your slab.

How to Stub Out Pipes in Concrete Slab

For some stub outs, like those terminating in appliance connections on top of the slab, you can carry the height of the stub out to the height of the appliance connection see your project plans for the details and dimensions. Doing so will save you a step later in connecting the appliance.

Select a pipe that will be the correct length for your stub out and install it into the up turned portion of the fitting. Attach the appropriate pressure test system for the pipe you have installed and conduct the test following the manufacturer's instructions.

For most pipes, such as gray water, gas and water lines, an air test is sufficient check the General Instructions section of your project plans to confirm that it is acceptable. Once you have conducted the pressure test and the pipe system has passed, wrap the pipe cap in duct tape just where it overlaps the pipe to prevent any concrete from splashing up into the threads.
